Do holiday romances last or do they belong in the same category as that sombrero you bought in Benidorm? Great at the time, slightly confusing once you’re home lol. x

The good news is that they’re not all doomed. Some of them fizzle out but some of them genuinely do go the distance and there’s usually a reason why.

Here’s the honest answer, plus a few ways to make yours one that does. ✌️

Holiday romances are often thought of as flings, but believe it or not, some last well beyond the flight home.

do holiday romances last?

Most don’t, but some do and probably more than you think.

A study of 2,000 UK adults found that 73% of people who’d had a holiday romance stayed in touch after getting home.

Now we know what you’re thinking: staying in touch isn’t quite the same as lasting (we’ve all got a “hey stranger” message sitting in our DMs), but it does show the spark doesn’t always die at the airport.

What usually decides it isn’t the chemistry. It’s what happens next: where you both live, whether you’ve seen the real version of each other and whether there’s actually a plan to meet up again.

So why do so many of them fizzle out?

why most holiday romances fizzle out

  1. the distance

You meet someone who lives halfway across the world and try to make it work, but eventually it becomes impossible, both logistically and financially. And then there’s the conversation about who’s going to make the big move…

  1. holiday you vs. tuesday-night you

The sun is shining, the cocktails are flowing and it’s all good vibes. But when you get back to reality and the mundane day-to-day kicks back in, you start to see how someone handles a bad day and it’s not always what you expected. 👀

  1. no shared life to come back to

On holiday, you’ve got everything in common: same hotel, same pool. Back home, there are no mutual friends, no shared plans and no reason to bump into each other. Without something to keep you connected, even the best holiday spark can fade as fast as your tan.

can a holiday romance last? yes, if…

you live in the same country (ideally the same city)

If your holiday crush lives in the same country or even better, the same city, rather than 2,000 miles away, a second date is only a train ride away, not a long-haul flight – way more realistic.

you’ve seen each other unfiltered

Early mornings, wobbly moments and how they treat staff and strangers tell you far more than a sunset ever will. That’s the stuff that really matters (we go into it more in what makes two people compatible?).

you plan the first date back home before you leave

It doesn’t need to be a big thing. A drink the weekend after you get back is enough to turn “we should meet up” into an actual plan.

you take the pressure off

Friendship first is completely fine and nobody’s keeping score. Going in with realistic, healthy expectations is a good place to start.

A singles ski trip might not be the first place you’d expect to find a holiday romance, but a long weekend in the mountains is a great way to meet new people.

why a singles ski trip is a different kind of holiday romance

Remember those reasons holiday romances fizzle out? A singles ski trip ticks off most of them before you’ve even clipped into your skis.

✅ The distance: most guests are UK-based singles, so your chairlift crush could live down the road rather than halfway across the world.

✅ The highlight reel: four nights of breakfasts, slopes and scavenger hunts mean nobody can keep up a filtered version of themselves for long.

✅ The pressure: it’s a group trip, with welcome drinks, mixers and reps on hand to make intros. Around 94% of guests come solo, so everyone’s in the same boat.

You can find out more in ski group holidays for singles: what to expect.

✅ The shared life back home: the group chat keeps going long after the trip and there are plenty of Haystack events to meet up at again.

Worst-case scenario? You head home with a camera roll full of memories and ten new mates.
